This page covers what each fault means, which parts you may touch yourself, and when a repair stops being worth it. For the wider picture, start with the Elimbah plumbing page or our bathroom plumbing work.

Shower Faults That Need a Plumber
Dripping, lukewarm water and weak flow are the three faults behind most of the shower work we get called to. Each one points at a different part of the fitting.
Most of the housing here went up from the 1980s on. Area-level figures put population growth at 8.0 percent across the five years to 2025, so plenty of bathrooms near Twin View Road and through the estates still run their original mixers.
A drip with the taps shut
the fault sits in the mixer, where a tired washer or cartridge lets water creep past its seal. Our dripping shower head guide explains how that differs from the head emptying after a shower.
Lukewarm or cold water
a worn cartridge can blend too much cold into the mix. When hot water fails at every tap in the house, the water heater is the suspect, and our hot water plumbing page covers that.
A weak or patchy spray
scale furring the spray holes, a flow restrictor sitting in the head, or a cartridge past its best. Low flow at one shower only rules out the house supply.
Water at the head join while the shower runs
a loose joint or a worn seal where the head screws onto the arm. That one usually settles with a reseat and a new seal.

What a New Shower Set Has to Meet
A repair stops paying for itself once the worn part sits beyond a washer or cartridge change. The same line applies when a plan adds an outlet or shifts the shower across the room, and replacement then carries rules of its own:
WaterMark certification
a licensed plumber may only legally install a shower fitting that carries it.
Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) registration
the scheme covers taps, showers and flow controllers alongside WaterMark, and the label shows the star rating.
The rental flow cap
Queensland tenancy rules require a rental shower to run at 9 litres per minute or under before the tenant can be billed for their full water use.
New dwellings
showerheads need a minimum 3-star WELS rating, though that rule does not extend to renovations.
Notifiable work
a new or shifted shower outlet gets reported to the QBCC rather than approved by council.
If the new shower is part of a bigger refit, our bathroom renovation plumbing page maps the full job, and a new vanity and basin can go in on the same visit.

Heads, Arms, Rails and Mixers Explained
From the spray end back to the wall, a shower is four parts, plus a fifth where a bath shares the space:
Shower head
the spray plate. The QBCC lets any householder replace this one.
Shower arm
the pipe reaching from the wall out to a fixed head. Repairs to it belong to a plumber.
Rail and hose
a rail holds a handheld head, fed by a hose from the wall outlet. Both sit on the licensed side.
Mixer and cartridge
the cartridge inside the mixer sets the flow and the hot and cold blend. A worn one brings drips, stiff handling or water at the wrong temperature, and a plumber matches the replacement to the mixer model.
Diverter
where a bath spout shares the wall, a worn diverter sends water to the wrong outlet, such as the spout running during a shower.
An in-wall mixer needs access through the wall, but the head, arm and rail on a fixed set are all reachable without opening anything up.

Can You Fix a Shower Yourself in Queensland
Yes, for one part. Replacing a shower head is unregulated work under the QBCC's rules, so a householder may legally do that alone, though the finished job still has to comply with the standards.
The arm, the wall mixer and the cartridge do not make that list. Work on a fixture or fitting counts as minor work: it needs a licensed plumber, but no council permit and no Form 4.
A new shower outlet, or a shower shifted to a new position, is a step further again. That job is notifiable work in an existing house, so a licensed plumber does it and reports it to the QBCC within ten business days of finishing.
The plumber lodges the form and pays the lodgement fee, which may be passed on to the owner along with the admin costs.

Shower Questions From Elimbah Homes
Call (07) 3523 7172Can a plumber fix my shower in Elimbah?
Yes, for the fittings: head, arm, rail, hose, mixer and cartridge. Water getting out of the shower recess through the floor or the wall tiles is a separate job from fixing the fittings, and we would tell you plainly if we found it.
Why does my shower head drip when the water is off?
A drip that keeps running once the taps are shut sits in the mixer, not the head. A worn washer or cartridge is letting water slip past its seal, while a short dribble straight after a shower is just the head emptying, which is normal.
Can I change my own shower head in Queensland?
Yes, the QBCC treats a shower head swap as unregulated work, so you may do that one yourself. The job still needs to meet the standards, and everything past the head belongs to a licensed plumber.
Do I need a plumber to install a new shower in my Elimbah home?
Yes, a new or moved shower outlet is notifiable work in an existing house. A licensed plumber does it, no council permit needed, and the Form 4 reaches the QBCC inside ten business days of finishing.
What flow rate does a rental shower need in Queensland?
A rental showerhead has to run at 9 litres per minute or under. Keeping it at that flow is one condition for passing the full water bill to a tenant, and the Residential Tenancies Authority advises looking for a WELS rating of 3 stars or higher.
